Eastern Region Junior Composite Eight Win For 2nd Year

On Saturday 13th March the 70th Women's Eights HORR took place on the Tideway. All the hard worked winter fitness was unleashed down the course from Chiswick to Putney on what was a pleasent spring day. Star Club had presentation in 4 crews: the School/Junior composite eight, the women's 1st eight, the women's 2nd eight and the UK Gold composite veteran eight.

The School/Junior composite eight led the way for Star, starting in 20th position. For 2 years in a row the Eastern Region has fielded a strong junior girls crew comprising of athletes from Dame Alice Harpur School, St Neots RC and Star Club. In 2009 they took the School/Junior pennant by less than a second over Lady Eleanor Hollis. This year's crew comprised two Star junior's: Poppy Sherborne sitting in the two seat and Ellie Grimley sitting in the bow seat. They started the race one place in front of LEH with Headington School starting a further 5 places behind. Headington had won the Women's Championship Eights at the Schools Head of the River Race on the Thursday before, so the crew knew they were the crew to beat, as well as LEH. They raced their own race and produced an outstanding performance to win their category by 4 seconds after only 2 weeks training and finishing in 33rd position overall.

The women's squad fielded 2 crews. The first eight, Star Club A, started the race in 98th place and finished in 125th place having felt they had a good row down the entire course. This crew had confidence going into the race after their recent performance at the Cambridge Winter League where they won the Women's Intermediate 3 Eights category after the 3 series of races.

The second eight, Star Club B, found themselves racing in a hired boat after an incident in their racing boat on race day. Thames RC were kind enough to lend Star one of their fleet which allowed the crew to race; some of whom this was their first race on the Tideway. Starting in 256th position they moved up the field to finish in 240th.

Miriam Taylor was the sole Star representative in the UK Gold composite Veteran C eight who again put in a competitive race to finish 60th overall, having started 216th. The veteran event was handicapped and after the handicap they finsihed 2nd in the Veteran category by 7 seconds behind a Barns Bridge Ladies A crew which included a number of ex-international rowers.

Well done to all the women who raced.

J16s win to secure place in Eastern Region team

On Saturday 27th February two junior crews travelled to Norwich to compete at Norwich Head, incorporating the Eastern Region Trials for the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta team.

The J16 4x of Patryk Grzegorzewski, Josh Rhodes-Hook, Lloyd Mulkerrins and Tom Jacobs secured their place in the team by winning their category by 7 seconds, while also being the fastest crew over the short-course distance of 2000m.

Also competing for a place in the team was the WJ15 4x+ which was a newly formed combination of Ceci Somervell (Cox), Claire Hughes, Amy Stockton, Rebecca Bennewith and Laura Haggerwood. They finished in 3rd place behind Oundle School, missing out on selection.

The J16 boys now compete at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta on Sunday 25th April at the NWSC, Nottingham.

British Rowing Coach of the Year Awards 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Nationally recognised Star Club Junior Coach

At the end of November nominations were invited for the British Rowing Coach of the Year Awards 2009 “These annual awards are an opportunity for the rowing community to recognise and celebrate the tremendous contribution of our coaches (paid and unpaid) to the success of our sport. It gives everyone a chance to say thank you.

The process for selecting the 2009 award winners starts with any individual, crew, squad, or club, submitting a nomination to their Regional Rowing Council for the Regional Coach of the Year event. The Regional winners are then put forward to the National Awards judging panel who will determine who receives the National Awards”.

Since August 2007 I have had the pleasure of working alongside Tatjana Rozman in both her roles as Junior Vice Captain and Coach for our increasingly successful Junior Squad. With her incredible dedication, meticulous and empathetic approach to her athletes and the success they have enjoyed as a result, I didn’t hesitate to gain the Management Board’s approval to submit the nomination form for Junior Coach of the Year 2009.

We had to wait until the first week of February before the news came through and Tatjana received a letter congratulating her on being ‘Commended’ in the Junior Coach category. As only a handful of people knew that we had nominated her (and she wasn’t one of them!), Tatjana was at first convinced that the junior boys were playing a practical joke (as if they would!).

The winners from each category were invited to attend the GB Rowing Team Winter Assessments at Dorney Lake on 14th February and either watch or help with the time keeping for the racing. Tatjana spent the morning with Darren Whiter (Olympic Coach for Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter), Steve Gunn (Start Programme Manager) and Richard Boulton (GB Juniors and Under 23s ) helping with the finish timing. This was followed by the presentations, some by Paul Thompson, but Tatjana’s framed certificate, much to her delight and surprise, was presented by Jurgen Grobler!

Tatjana has been helping with junior boys and girls at Star Club for 8 years. Her interest began when her son Daniel started rowing in 2000, and subsequently her two daughters, Hanika and Helena and she has continued ever since.  She qualified with her Instructor Award in 2005 and has always shown great sensitivity with the boys and girls she has coached. The rewards for Tatjana’s hard work began in the 2005/2006 season when she was a joint coach for the J16 boys. They showed great promise as a Coxed Four and enjoyed a successful Head and Regatta season, culminating with a Gold Medal at the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain, held in Strathclyde, for which the boys still hold the course record.

In 2006/2007 Tatjana was coaching a mix of J15 to J18 boys and again they all enjoyed a rewarding year with many wins at local and regional events, and more notably Bronze medallists in the J16 4X (including two J15 boys) at The National Rowing Championships in Nottingham.

2007/2008 found Tatjana as a joint coach for a group of J16, J17 and J18 girls. Local and regional events produced some very encouraging results. The National Schools Regatta was abandoned due to windy weather, but not before the WJ16 2X achieved the silver medal position. At The National Rowing Championships the WJ 4X and WJ16 1X were finalists.

In the last 2008/2009 season Tatjana was the head coach for the J16 and J17 boys. They all experienced so much success and enjoyment from the year. Pots and medals flooded in from local and regional events, but the notable successes were Silver Medallists in the J17 4x at the Junior Sculling Head, finalists at the National Schools Regatta in J16 4X, Silver Medallists in J16 4x and Bronze Medallist in J17 1X at the National Rowing Championships.   The highlight of the season was the Star Club entry for the Fawley Challenge Cup at Royal Henley Regatta. The target had been to qualify and anything beyond that was a bonus! At the qualifiers the quad were the second fastest boat and subsequently spent three days training and familiarising themselves on the Henley course ahead of their first race on the Thursday. Following in the Umpire’s launch Tatjana was able to witness her crew command the race from the Start, winning comfortably and possibly not expected by their opposition. Their second race on the Friday evening put them up against Melbourne Grammar School, from Australia. The Star Club boys put up a good fight and despite losing to the ultimate finalists enjoyed their race and made their Coach very proud.  A fantastic experience for all!

As a Junior coach Tatjana is always the ultimate professional. She demonstrates great understanding and respect of her athletes. She nurtures them, knows what motivates them and what demotivates them, always keeping the training sessions interesting and she encourages them to work to the best of their ability. She will often reward her group with a surprise ‘feast’ of nutritious snacks and drinks at the end of a particularly demanding training session.  She is fair, diplomatic, and is highly respected by her athletes and fellow coaches.

For the last 5 years, Tatjtana has also looked after the Junior Squad finances, collecting and paying competition fees and keeping records for each individual member, all with absolute precision.

In 2007 Tatjana agreed to take on the official position of Junior Vice Captain and has proved to be an invaluable support to the present Captain; in fact it has been more of an exceptionally good partnership.

Congratulations Tatjana!

Hampton Fours & Eights Head 2010 PDF Print E-mail

More wins at Hampton for juniors brings tally to 20

February is one of the busiest months on the racing calendar for Star Club's Juniors and Hampton Fours and Eights Head was the 1st of 4 events you will see them competing at this month.

On Saturday 6th February, 7 junior crews traveled down to Hampton to compete over the 3000m course against some of the best junior crews in the country and our juniors did not disappoint; bringing the total junior wins of the season to 20.

Hampton's Fours & Eights Head also included small boat events for the J18s, which allows all GB trialists the opportunity to compete with only 2 weeks to the 2nd GB Winter Assessments in Boston. All Star Club's GB Trialists for the 2010 season competed in Division 1.

The first of the GB trialist crews to race was the J18 2- of Ross Mizen and Richard Hepher. Both had never rowed sweep before January of this year and this was to be their first ever sweep race. They put in a respectable performance finishing in 4th place in a time of 9:12; only 17 seconds behind winners Molsey.

Next were our 2 single scullers. Tom Durrant competing in J18 1x and Ellie Grimley in WJ18 1x. Tom started the race at the front of the pack following his impressive performance back in November at Hampton SBH, but couldn't quite win the race after a difficult row in very washy water from the men's pairs. Tom finished in 2nd behind a Tiffin School sculler; in a time of 9:17.

Ellie competed though she had been troubled with a back injury leading into the race but she was determined to put in a solid performance. Again leading the pack off, her gusty row placed her in 6th place out of 12 at the end of the day; finishing only 30 seconds behind Atkinson of Runcorn RC in a time of 10:30.

Division 2 saw the bigger boats compete over the same distance. Star entered 3 coxless quads and 1 coxed quad crew. The first of these being the J18 4x of Ross Mizen, Tom Durrant, Richard Hepher and Andy Walker. They didn't row their best race but again showed their strength and produced an outstanding performance finishing 2nd out of 12 starters in a time of 7:55; placing them only 12 seconds behind the winners Westminster School; finalists at Henley Royal Regatta 2009 in the Fawley Cup.

The J17 4x followed comprising Ellie Grimley stroking, Matt Tapley, Kieran Elliott and Will Stockton. The newly formed crew put in a solid performance and finished on top beating 3 other crews to win in a time of 8:18.

The J16 4x have already had a very impressive season and again this crew of Patryk G, Josh Rhodes-Hook, Lloyd Mulkerrins and Micheal Jobling put in a performance which placed them on top of the results board winning their category of 11 starters in a time of 8:21; some 8 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

The final crew to race was the WJ15 4x+ of Ceci Somervell (Cox), Claire Hughes, Jordan Elliott, Amy Stockton and Laura Haggerwood. A little under par on the day with illness in the crew saw a disappointing result with the crew finishing in 13th place out of 21.
