St Neots Regatta 2008 PDF Print E-mail

More wins to end season on a high

St Neots’ regatta took place last weekend, the 26th and 27th of July with racing happening on both days. The Saturday course was 1000m long and the Sunday sprint slightly shorter at 500m. In the hot and sunny conditions, winter training had obviously paid off as Star Club’s large presence was rewarded with a number of victories in many of its squads.

The Women’s Squad had a very successful weekend, amounting to the best series of results the Star Women’s Squad have had for a number of years. On the Saturday, the Women’s Novice 4 of: Georgina Davies, Michelle Seddon, Kirsten Proctor, Isobel Garrard and coxed by Sophie Bulled had a convincing win of 4 lengths to beat Norwich Rowing Club in the final. Sunday’s racing produced a double success for the women when the Senior 4 crew of: Sophie Barnwell, Ellie Rowles, Debra Scott, Helen Thompson and cox Martine Kushner raced impressively to beat Milton Keynes Rowing Club by 1 length to win their category and move up to Senior 3 standard. The two fours then combined with cox Clarissa Coveny for a hard fought 8’s final against Maidstone Rowing Club. The scratch combination rowed with good control to win by 1 length in the final.

Star Juniors were also true to form and Saturday wins consisted of a WJ 1X Ruby Ellam, a J16 1X Tom Beechinor and a S3 2X win for Tom Durrant and Sam Butler. On the Sunday more wins followed and were a S3 4X crew of Tom Durrant, Tom Beechinor, Andrew Walker and Sam Butler, a win by S3 2X of Sam Butler and Daniel Rozman, a WJ4X composite crew of Helena Rozman, Rachel Crockford (St Neots), Catherine Mulvaney and Hui Yang Manley and a Mixed J15 4X+ crew consisting of Charlotte Cook, Jonny Cook, Ross Mizen, Victoria Huckle and cox Tom Durrant.

In their first major win, the Men’s Novice “A” crew of Alex Collard, Simon Lamb, Andy Chillingsworth and Dick Talboys, coxed by Martine Kushner, convincingly fought off Maidstone Invitica in the final to secure a win and move up to Senior 4 status.

Other crews rowed well and many won their first heats to lose by a mater of feet in semis and finals, including the Men’s Novice “B” crew of Tim Brown, Ian Burgoyne, Andy Whale and Richard Legg, coxed by Laura Wallbank, who in their first win beat Globe rowing club in the first heat only to lose by no clear water to Peterborough City in the second heat.

All crews can look forward confidently to the final event of the season; Peterborough Summer Regatta and from there on to the Winter Head season from September.

GB vs France Match PDF Print E-mail

Star secures win to represent GB

A junior sixteen quad has made it five Star Club Juniors representing Great Britain as they were victorious in their race off at the GB France match trials. Competing against the two quickest quads of the season in Evesham and William Borlase they powered through after the first 250 metres to gain a lead of one and half lengths that they never looked like loosing. The quad of Victoria Huckle, Charlotte Cook, Ruby Ellam and Ellie Grimley now travel to France where they take on the French in a head to head winner takes all race.

Three of the girls are WJ15 with Ruby Ellam leading the boat as the only WJ16 showing a promising group for the future of Junior girls at Star Club.

The boats success is put down to a strong junior set up led by both Nicky Durrant (Junior Captain) and Tatjana Rozman (Junior Vice Captain). Congratulations should also go to the coaches of the girls over the past season: David Johnson, David Swain, Tatjana Rozman, Rosie Mayglothling and Tristan Mayglothling.

GB Final Trials PDF Print E-mail

Lottie secures a place in the Coupe team

Lottie Burgess was representing Star Club at the final set of trials to secure a place in the junior international team a week after her victory at Womens Henley.

Unfortunately a poor start in her single left her in sixth position leaving Lottie with alot of work to do over the next two days to recover her position. This was done in brilliant fashion as Lottie proved herself to be very quick in both a double and quad as she moved back up the rankings to fourth. Due to only a double scull going to the Junior World Championships Lottie will be heading to Ireland with the Coupe de la Jeunesse team in a double with Juliet Steynour from Marlow Rowing Club. Good luck to both of them.

It has capped off a hugely successful season for Lottie and we wish her the best over the summer and then onto her University rowing.
