Star rowers shine in National Championships

Star Club continued their successful regatta season by hauling in five medals at the Great Britain National Rowing Championships.

Star Club took a strong squad of seven crews to the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, comprising both senior and junior members.

The Women’s Junior 16 coxless quad of Lauren White, Charlotte Cook, Eleanor Grimley and Victoria Huckle comfortably won the gold medal. This crew then doubled up in the Women’s Junior 18 coxless quad, finishing just outside the medals with a creditable fifth place.

The second medal from the junior squad came in the form of the Men’s Junior 16 coxless quad of Ross Mizen, Matthew Tapley, Richard Hepher and William Stockton.

Earlier in the season this crew just missed out on a medal at the National Schools Regatta but they reversed this verdict and secured a superb silver medal.

The lone male single sculler of the weekend was Thomas Durrant, who was racing in the Men’s Junior 17 Sculls event. Tom showed his class on Sunday evening having rowed through the field to win the bronze medal.

It was then the turn of the Senior Men’s squad.

The first of the Senior crews was the composite Lightweight quad which comprised Star Club’s Christopher Callow, Robert Arnold from Trent RC, Paul Hamblett from Sudbury RC and Steven Hemsworth from Worcester RC.

This crew were the bronze medallists from 2008 and had been training to become National Champions, though unfortunately they were pipped to the gold by 0.75 seconds, finishing with the silver medal.
Forty five minutes later it was the turn of the Open Coxless four, semi finalists from Henley Royal Regatta.

The crew of William Eason, Edward Porteus, Joel Grant-Jones and Christopher Callow came second in their heat behind the Leander Club which secured their place in the final on Sunday afternoon.

They battled through the ever-worsening conditions to win yet another medal behind Leander, picking up the silver.
